Detectives fear a British woman was lured into an abandoned house in Athens and killed before her remains were stuffed into a suitcase.
Elisabeth-Jane Ross is believed to have been staying with a friend in the Greek capital as police seek to piece together her final movements.
Detectives told local media they are now investigating her mobile phone which ‘remained active’ after she died.
They believe someone was sending messages to create the false impression that she was still alive. It was then switched off when the case began to garner international attention.
The criminal investigation has been launched after the suitcase was found in a run-down part of the Kypseli neighbourhood by a homeless man on July 18.
He followed a bad smell into an abandoned building where he found the suitcase with what looked like a ‘human limb’ poking out,according to local reports.
The family of Elisabeth have been notified of the discovery of her bodyPolice suspect she was ‘lured’ to the location by a ‘homeless person’ authorities told The Times.It is thought the Edinburgh native had been dead for around eight days before she was discovered.She was described as being 5ft 4in tall with auburn hair gathered back in a bun.She was wearing a black T-shirt and shorts but had no tattoos or other distinguishing marks.An investigation was launched to identify the body,with fingerprints and DNA samples taken and analysed.
Police asked Interpol for help identifying Elisabeth Ross (Picture: Intime News/Athena Pictures)An Interpol office returned results to Greek police informing that the body belongs to a British woman born in February 1988.Authorities told local media they were treating her death ‘as a criminal act,given how the body was found’.Her father has been informed of her death as detectives try to figure out her last known movements and the people she was with.Police will establish whether she travelled to Greece alone or with a group with the airline.At the same time,they will see whether there was a reservation at a hotel with her details.
