Man arrested, accused of throwing rocks at Oceanside police officer

Karen Kucher –

A 39-year-old man suspected of stealing cigarettes from an Oceanside drug store was arrested Saturday night after allegedly throwing rocks at a police car and at an officer.

Police were called shortly before 10:30 p.m. after a man jumped a counter in a Walgreens drug store on Mission Avenue and stole cigarettes. An officer responding to the call spotted a man matching the thief’s description near a bus stop, police spokesman Tom Bussey said.

As the officer drove past a bus stop near the store, the man picked up a rock and threw it at the patrol car, hitting the car near its rear passenger window. When the officer got out of his car, the man threw another rock, narrowly missing the officer.

Officers tried to stop the man but he refused to comply with commands and began walking in and out of traffic on the street and asking officers to shoot him, Bussey said.

Police tackled the man and arrested him on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer. He was being held Monday in jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Bussey said the man is a transient.
